With four popular, low maintenance material options – Aluminum, Vinyl, Composite, and Steel – we’ve taken the complexity out of choosing railing for your project and simplified it down to three easy steps:

To figure out what type of deck railing is best for you, start by getting a good grasp of the budget for the project and what you’re looking to use the outdoor living space for. For example, vinyl railing offers durability while being budget friendly, whereas cable railing will offer a great look but can cost more than other options..

While the exact baseline requirement can differ depending on where you live, any deck that is under 30 inches does not need railing. However, it’s important to consider safety even if a deck is not that high off the ground. For example, a deck that is only 24 inches off the ground can still pose a safety risk even if a railing isn’t required by code.
While the specific code requirement will differ depending on where you live, a good rule of thumb is to have deck railing that is 36 inches high. That measurement is taken from the deck surface to the top of the railing. A 36-inch-high railing can help ensure the safety of anyone enjoying an outdoor living space.
When you buy a deck railing product like the ones made by Envision Outdoor Living, start by following the instructions in the box. Deck railing experts have designed these instructions to railing installation easier for homeowners and contractors. You’ll always want to use any screws, fasteners, or other supporting pieces that come with railing products. Envision also has a wide variety of online resources to help you install deck railing.

When you’re looking to attach deck railing to posts, the process often changes depending on what material and brand you’re using. It’s best to follow the manufacturer’s instruction for the best results.

  • Outside of traditional wooden deck railing, there are four other main types that are great options for outdoor living spaces.

The first step to fixing deck railing is identifying the problem area. If part of the railing is wobbly, start by tightening any screws or fixtures it’s attached to. In the case that part of the railing is damaged, it’s important to replace as soon as possible to minimize the safety risk. Contact the manufacturer of the deck railing to order a replacement part. The installation instructions that came with the original deck railing should give you guidance on how to replace the broken component. Plus, you can always head over the resource library on the Envision Outdoor Living website for further support.

The best way to clean deck railing differs based on what type of material it’s made from. For aluminum, all you need is some water, non-abrasive soap, and a sponge. Simply clean off any dirt and gently dry. If the railing is steel, just use water to clear off the dirt and dry with a rag or towel. Vinyl railing just needs some scrubbing with soapy water to clear off any dirt or grime. Finally, composite railing needs a quick rinse off with a hose after scrubbing it down with a soapy water.
To properly install cable deck railing, you’ll want to make sure the deck posts are installed. After the holes in the deck posts are drilled through, you’re ready to start installing the cable deck railing. On one of the last deck posts, the treaded portion of the cable railing should be visible. Then you’ll want to attach the washer and nut. After that, feed the cable through each of the deck post holes until you reach the end. You’ll want to pull the excess cable to create tension before attaching the washer and bolt on the other side. Repeat this process for as many cable rails that are needed.
While there might be some adjustments based on the specific area where you live, the U.S. building codes says that the railing structure can be no further than 6 feet apart on a deck with 4×4’ railing posts, and less than 8 feet apart for a deck with 6×6’ railing posts. If the outdoor living space has stairs, U.S. code requires railing posts to less than 5.5 feet apart.
  • If you’re a contractor doing any type of commercial projects, it’s recommended to use ADA rail for a higher level of safety. For any home outdoor living projects, a good rule of thumb to follow is to use ADA railing for decks that have any steps with four or more risers. As always, we recommend checking local code requirements to ensure compliance.
